Learn how to transfer your drawings or photographs into stencils\, drypoint and collagraph plates using a computer and an electronic stencil-cutting machine. \n\n\n\nThe Cameo Silhouette stencil machine looks like a printer and is just as affordable. It uses a small blade to cut thin plastic sheets\, cardstock\, yupo\, vinyl\, and other materials. This workshop will give hands-on instruction on how to cut and incise your image creating printing plates from this cutting machine. We will explore relief\, drypoint and collagraph and give tips for using vinyl for a resist for etched plates and stencils for silkscreen. SUMMARY:Forme Naturali (Natural Forms)
DESCRIPTION:The Guardia summer is once again tinged with art\, with the event entitled Forme Naturali which will be held in the historic center on Friday 24 July\, at the Monte dei Pegni\, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. \n\n\n\nPromoting and curating the event is Helena Wadsely\, an artist from the Canadian city of Vancouver. For about three years\, the artist has been hosting artists from all over the world with the “Terra Vivente Art Studio” residency\, located in the ancient village of Guardia. During their stay\, they create a series of works that they exhibit in an exhibition at the end of their artistic experience in Guardia. \n\n\n\nThe “Natural Forms” exhibition features the work of four international artists. The artists participating in the July residency at Terra Vivente Art Studio are: Margaret Craig\, a sculptor and printmaker from Texas\, USA\, who presents a project using recycled plastic bottles and transforming them into delicate organic forms; Ingrid Tremblay\, a French-Canadian from Montreal\, who works with natural forms\, sculpted locally found tuff\, and made plaster molds of local plant life; Crystal Davis\, a poet from Tasmania\, Australia\, who brought her vintage typewriter with her to write on leaves and other natural material\, and also made videos of her investigations during the residency; Rachael Bower\, an artist from Texas\, USA\, inspired by the plant and animal life present in Guardia\, worked with drawing and painting on paper. \n\n\n\n“The realization of these events is important\, as they aim to make the historic center an art village\,” declared the local representative of the initiative\, Carlo Di Lonardo. “I have been supporting the Terra Vivente art laboratory for three years now\, thanks to which dozens of artists have stayed in Guardia and have chosen the village as a place to live an experience through which they can draw inspiration for their art and creativity.” \n\n\n\nThe event is sponsored by the Municipality of Guardia Sanframondi\, which has made available to the artists the municipal building in the historic center “Monte dei Pegni”\, where the exhibitions will be set up.

Rubin has assembled the work of 17 outstanding San Antonio-based artists: Kim Bishop\, Sabra Booth\, Justin Boyd\, James Cobb\, Margaret Craig\, Meredith Dean\, Marlys Dietrick\, Elizabeth Elequin\, Joey Fauerso\, Enrique Gutierrez\, Hilal & Kati Hibri\, Jayne Lawrence\, Leigh Anne Lester\, Eric Mathis\, Alejandro Padilla\, Samuel Velasquez and Lloyd Walsh. \n\n\n\n\nGlobal warming\, deforestation\, pollution of water\, food\, and air\, the ongoing battle against diseases such as AIDS\, Alzheimer’s\, and cancer — these topics have filled the media airwaves and internet websites for at least a quarter of a century\, and no one remains unaffected. In the case of artists\, what the individual feels and thinks about these matters is expressed creatively\, and today many are investigating environmental issues using a variety of approaches. This exhibition showcases recent works by . . . artists who have become fascinated with the environmental changes that are taking place and altering our relationship to the natural world. DESCRIPTION:Margaret CraigOcean Harvest \n\n\n\nmixed media \n\n\n\nON VIEW: March 7 – April 24\, 2015 \n\n\n\nOpening Reception:First Saturday\, March 76 – 9 PM\n\n\n\nRegular Gallery Hours:Fridays and SaturdaysNoon – 6 PM \n\n\n\nArtist Statement:\n\n\n\nMy work is derived from printmaking methods; using multiples\, mixed media with or without support\, and prints stretched over forms using a technique I developed. My work is about the manipulation of form that transforms the idea; a recreation of multilayered process found in nature. A degree in biology informs my work. Scientific process controls the work\, each layer a response to the results of the last experiment. The underlying imagery for me is about other worlds\, and the portals between; worlds under the microscope or among the stars\, drains\, conduits and black holes. There are skins\, translucent membranes on which the universe resides and puckers.But they also may be leaves and pond scum floating past on the surface of water\, or plastic that evolves into creatures from the congregation of trash by the ocean gyres. \n\n\n\nMy art concerns contemplation of the ways we affect the plants and animals around us\, and\, sometimes how we may be affected by them. The excessive process I use in my work evokes a quality of human over manipulation. My intent is to create work that will engender thought about the relationship between humans and their surroundings. \n\n\n\nBiography:\n\n\n\nMargaret Craig received a degree in Biology Secondary Education\, a BS in Art and an MA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison. She received an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She invented Tar Gel Pressless Etching and has demonstrated that and other techniques at national conferences. She is often involved in trade portfolios and exhibits locally\, nationally and internationally. Currently she is Professor and Chair of Printmaking at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio\, TX . SUMMARY:The Great Trash Reef
DESCRIPTION:Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum announces “The Great Trash Reef ” an installation by San Antonio\, TX-based artist Margaret Craig\, from January 2 through February 15\, 2015. An Opening Reception will take place Friday\, February 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm\, and is open and free to the public. \n\n\n\nARTIST STATEMENT \n\n\n\nMy work is derived from printmaking methods; mixed media with or without support\, and prints stretched over forms using a technique I developed. My work is about the manipulation of form that transforms the idea; a recreation of multilayered process found in nature. A degree in biology informs my work. The process controls the work\, each layer a response to the results of the last experiment. The outcome proves the hypothesis of what might happen\, and leaves me open to surprising results. I create synthetic natural processes\, think pond scum or the dry earth cracking\, in the service of my own making. My art extends the process of human manipulation of natural influences. It concerns contemplation of the ways we affect the plants and animals around us\, and\, sometimes how they may affect us. \n\n\n\nThe Great Trash Reef speculates on the state of our oceans. There are giant islands of trash gathered by currents in the centers of our oceans. The predominant component is plastic. Tragically in some cases\, as it breaks down animals eat it thinking it is food. But there are also water skating insects that use it as places to lay eggs and have grown in population. At the same time CO2 in the environment is causing less global warming then thought\, as oceans absorb it. But this also acidifies the oceans and sea life cannot form shells from the traditional calcium. Perhaps it will use this new readily available ingredient?

She received an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Texas at San Antonio. \n\n\n\nShe invented Tar Gel Pressless Etching and has demonstrated that and other techniques at SCG and MAPC conferences. DESCRIPTION:Margaret Craig will present How to be an Expert in 300-year-old Information Technology (and make it contemporary) at PechaKucha Night (Vol. 12) held at the Coates Chapel at the Southwest School of Art\, November 19\, 2013\, at 7:30pm. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 6:30 for a happy hour beforehand. Your $5 donation will help cover costs for complimentary food\, Alamo Beer\, and equipment. \n\n\n\nPechaKucha (Japanese for “chit chat”) was started in Tokyo in 2003 by Klein Dytham architecture “as an event for young designers to meet\, network\, and show their work in public.” It has now spread to over 700 cities. When it first came to San Antonio in February of 2011\, there were a little over 200 cities officially participating. PechaKucha events usually have between 6 and 11 participants; in San Antonio\, we typically have 8. We invite artists\, architects\, writers\, woodworkers\, journalists\, all kinds of designers\, and other creative professionals.

It is this coincidence and surprise element that led me to choose the works made by the Spring Takt artists group where nature is not limited to landscape or the environment but extends to examinations of human nature.

DESCRIPTION:Work by Margaret Craig will appear in PRINTTX 2013. \n\n\n\nPRINTTX is a juried exhibition of contemporary Texas printmaking organized by PrintMatters and the Museum of Printing History as part of PrintHouston 2013. The show is juried by Peter S. Briggs\, the Helen DeVitt Jones Curator of Art at the Museum of Texas Tech University. \n\n\n\nForty-five artists submitted prints. Briggs chose 23 original prints by 20 artists. The artists chosen represent both emerging and established artists from throughout Texas\, including from Kingsville\, Houston\, San Antonio\, Austin and Dallas. \n\n\n\nThe opening reception is on June 13\, 6-8 p.m. \n\n\n\nOn view through Sept. 14. \n\n\n\nThe Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday\, 10:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.

SUMMARY:Demo 6: The Yupo Matrix and Digital Ground: Off-Market Product Use for Innovative Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:This demo will show printmakers how to use Yupo Paper and Digital Ground for Non-Porous Surfaces for off market purposes\, producing innovative prints. Yupo is a plastic watercolor “paper” developed for the commercial graphics industry that can become a matrix for watercolor monoprint\, collagraph\, and digital transfer. Yupo will be used for a watercolor monotype\, and then create a collagraph\, printing the image with damp paper and a press. With this flexible base\, digital ground for non-porous surfaces will be used to put inked plates through an unmodified inkjet printer for a combination of conventional and alternative printing processes; it will also be printed with wet paper and an etching press. This new material for the matrix will marry a spectrum of traditional and alternative creation as well as show digital transfer.
