SUMMARY:The Great Trash Reef – Sculpture Month Houston 2019
DESCRIPTION:Sculpture Month Houston Public Kick-off Party / Opening Reception: Outta Space \n\n\n\nOpening Night Music by Chapel In The Sky with Projections by Michael Walrond | SHDWSOFDUST \n\n\n\nSITE Gallery Houston\, The Silos at Sawyer Yards\, 1502 Sawyer St. Suite 400 \n\n\n\nOpen Hours: Wed.-Sat. 12-6pm\, Tours at 2pm on Saturday followed by select artist performances at 3pm \n\n\n\nMargaret Craig’s Great Trash Reef has been evolving and expanding since 2016. Built from a foundation of repurposed plastic gathered from the artist’s household and Texas beaches\, and painstakingly sculpted and augmented with Craig’s innovative printing methods\, the reef reminds the viewer of the accumulation of toxic trash the ocean gyres hold. The aquarium-like walk-through exposes one to a myriad of real and imagined organisms and life forms. \n\n\n\nMargaret Craig\, The Great Trash Reef detail shot. Photo credit: Sean Ward.

SUMMARY:Sea Islands
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement\n\n\n\n\nMy artwork is a contemplation on the ways we affect the plants and animals around us\, and how we may be affected by them. I approach this from a biology background as well as from artistic printmaking methodologies. My most recent interpretation involves plastic\, which I repurpose and evolve into creatures which might one day populate the congregation of trash in the ocean gyres. This is not without precedent. The bacteria\, ideonella sakainsis\, eats plastic. \n\n\n\nWith this piece\, conceived during the Blue Star Contemporary Berlin Residency Program\, I walked the city street collecting materials\, stuff that would fall into rivers and then flow to oceans. I added and manipulated my own printed materials to create the evolving islands. The installation\, Sea Islands\, includes both my artist and household trash. The raw materials coalesce into eddies with the tide. \n\n\n\nThe viewer climbs a pier on the shore to view what is collecting there. As an artist\, I utilize and manipulate plastic in communicating my message. My intent is to create work that will engender thought about the relationship between humans and their surroundings. \n\n\n\n \nMargaret Craig\n\n\n\nMargaret Craig\, Sea Islands detail shot. SUMMARY:Arrivals & Departures
DESCRIPTION:Leeds Print Workshop has collaborated with printmakers at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio\, Texas\, to make a body of work which we’ll exhibit here in Leeds. The exhibition is built around a print exchange (one of the loveliest traditions in printmaking) where we’ll send prints to San Antonio and receive a whole set back. The theme of the exchange is “Arrivals and Departures”\, and we’ll exhibit the results from both countries. Founder LPW member Mick Welbourn is a regular visitor to San Antonio\, and cooked up the plan for this exchange on his last trip over. One of our goals for Leeds Print Workshop is to forge connections with a community of printmakers\, so we’re pretty chuffed that we’ve hooked up with Texas! \n\n\n\nOpening on the 7th July\, our Leeds/Texas exhibition will be on display in the East Street Arts Project Space at 130 Vicar Lane. Come along to see what promises to be a fascinating range of printmaking techniques and concepts. Added bonus: Ham & Friends have generously offered their support by providing drinks and nibbles for opening night. International printmaking and delicious fare provided by a local business – what more do you need? \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be open every day between 7th July until 21st July\, so make sure you catch it.

SUMMARY:Flatbed Press 25th Anniversary Homecoming – Austin\, TX
DESCRIPTION:For twenty-five years Flatbed has been fortunate to have the assistance of many creative individuals to help in our publication of etchings\, lithographs\, relief prints\, screen prints and monotypes\, with artists from all over the world. We are more than a business; we are a community of like-minded artists\, gallerists\, and printmakers who believe in the power of the fine art print. Whether our printers\, assistants\, or interns were here for a short while or stayed the course for years\, we are ever grateful for their dedication to the work here and are proud to have had a part in their lives. Many have remained active in the print world; some have become curators and teachers and others have created art-related businesses or pursued other art practices. It is a pleasure to show selected works by these individuals\, many of whom now live far from Austin. The work includes printmaking\, installation\, sculpture\, ceramics\, and painting. Join us in welcoming them and celebrating their work at a reception and opening Saturday\, November 14 from 6-8pm. \n\n\n\nArtists include: Kristen Bartel\, Cordelia Blanchard\, Teresa Bond\, Byron Brauchli\, Noah Breuer\, Katherine Brinberry\, Robert Brown\, Adrienne Butler\, Heather Butler\, Lauren Cardenas\, Belinda Casey\, Veronica Ceci\, Lee Chesney\, Margaret Craig\, Margie Crisp\, Jeffrey Dell\, Tom Drucker\, Catherine Dudley\, Emily Eaton\, Lilian Garcia-Roig\, Alex Giffen\, Terri Goodhue\, Teresa Gomez-Martorell\, Annalise Gratovich\, Nancy Gray\, Carol Hayman\, Tim High\, Hallie Rae Ward\, Whitney Hill\, Alfonso Huerta Garcia\, Laura Jennings\, Brian Johnson\, Amelia Jones\, Gabel Karsten\, Heidi Landau\, Pat Masterson\, Tracy Mayrello\, Deborah McLouth\, Joshua Orsburn\, Heather Parrish\, Elvia Perrin\, Serena Perrone\, Carolyn Porter\, Pecos Pryor\, Christopher Reno\, Clifton Riley\, Thomas Rogers\, Stan Scott\, Margie Simpson\, Gingi Statman\, James Turner\, Tina Weitz\, Cassie White\, Cynthia Young.

SUMMARY:Forme Naturali (Natural Forms)
DESCRIPTION:The Guardia summer is once again tinged with art\, with the event entitled Forme Naturali which will be held in the historic center on Friday 24 July\, at the Monte dei Pegni\, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. \n\n\n\nPromoting and curating the event is Helena Wadsely\, an artist from the Canadian city of Vancouver. For about three years\, the artist has been hosting artists from all over the world with the “Terra Vivente Art Studio” residency\, located in the ancient village of Guardia. During their stay\, they create a series of works that they exhibit in an exhibition at the end of their artistic experience in Guardia. \n\n\n\nThe “Natural Forms” exhibition features the work of four international artists. The artists participating in the July residency at Terra Vivente Art Studio are: Margaret Craig\, a sculptor and printmaker from Texas\, USA\, who presents a project using recycled plastic bottles and transforming them into delicate organic forms; Ingrid Tremblay\, a French-Canadian from Montreal\, who works with natural forms\, sculpted locally found tuff\, and made plaster molds of local plant life; Crystal Davis\, a poet from Tasmania\, Australia\, who brought her vintage typewriter with her to write on leaves and other natural material\, and also made videos of her investigations during the residency; Rachael Bower\, an artist from Texas\, USA\, inspired by the plant and animal life present in Guardia\, worked with drawing and painting on paper. \n\n\n\n“The realization of these events is important\, as they aim to make the historic center an art village\,” declared the local representative of the initiative\, Carlo Di Lonardo. “I have been supporting the Terra Vivente art laboratory for three years now\, thanks to which dozens of artists have stayed in Guardia and have chosen the village as a place to live an experience through which they can draw inspiration for their art and creativity.” \n\n\n\nThe event is sponsored by the Municipality of Guardia Sanframondi\, which has made available to the artists the municipal building in the historic center “Monte dei Pegni”\, where the exhibitions will be set up.

SUMMARY:Nature on the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Nature on the Edge: Mutation & Hybridity in 21st Century Art \n\n\n\nCurated by David S. Rubin \n\n\n\nMay 22-July 25\, 2015 \n\n\n\nDavid S. Rubin has assembled the work of 17 outstanding San Antonio-based artists: Kim Bishop\, Sabra Booth\, Justin Boyd\, James Cobb\, Margaret Craig\, Meredith Dean\, Marlys Dietrick\, Elizabeth Elequin\, Joey Fauerso\, Enrique Gutierrez\, Hilal & Kati Hibri\, Jayne Lawrence\, Leigh Anne Lester\, Eric Mathis\, Alejandro Padilla\, Samuel Velasquez and Lloyd Walsh. \n\n\n\n\nGlobal warming\, deforestation\, pollution of water\, food\, and air\, the ongoing battle against diseases such as AIDS\, Alzheimer’s\, and cancer — these topics have filled the media airwaves and internet websites for at least a quarter of a century\, and no one remains unaffected. In the case of artists\, what the individual feels and thinks about these matters is expressed creatively\, and today many are investigating environmental issues using a variety of approaches. This exhibition showcases recent works by . . . artists who have become fascinated with the environmental changes that are taking place and altering our relationship to the natural world. While some focus on the organic process of change itself\, others are intrigued by hybrids and mutants\, new or variant forms of life and culture that have emerged or that can be imagined as the environment continues to evolve and time moves forward.~David S.
